  39. NASA SELECTS SMALL BUSINESS INNOVATION RESEARCH PROJECTS

  42.      NASA announced today the selection of 84 research proposals 
  43. for immediate negotiation of Phase II contracts in NASA's Small 
  44. Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR).  Proposals selected 
  45. were submitted by 79 small, high technology firms located in 25 
  46. states.
  47.  
  48.      Selections were chosen competitively from 201 proposals sub-
  49. mitted for Phase II continuations of SBIR Phase I projects 
  50. initiated in 1989.  Total value of awards will be about $42 
  51. million.
  52.  
  53.      SBIR objectives are to stimulate technological innovation in 
  54. the United States by using small business, including minority and 
  55. disadvantaged firms, to help meet Federal research and 
  56. development needs and to encourage commercial applications of 
  57. federally supported research innovations.
  58.  
  59.      SBIR Phase II continues the most promising Phase I projects, 
  60. those which have demonstrated technical feasibility and the 
  61. highest potential value to NASA as research innovations.  
  62. Selection criteria include technical merit and innovation, Phase 
  63. I results, value to NASA, commercial potential and company 
  64. capabilities.  Funding for Phase II contracts may be up to 
  65. $500,000 for up to a 2-year period.
  66.  
  67.      Additional Phase II selections, to be announced in January 
  68. 1991, are expected to bring the total number of selections to 
  69. more than 120 and the total procurement value to about $60 
  70. million.
  71.  
  72.      The SBIR program is managed by NASA's Office of Commercial 
  73. Programs, NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C., and all individual 
  74. SBIR projects are managed by nine NASA field centers.
  75.
